During the Gemini program, astronauts tested the Hand-Held Maneuvering Unit, often nicknamed the “zip gun.” This nitrogen-powered device allowed them to practice moving freely in space without being tethered to the spacecraft. Although later systems proved more effective, these early experiments marked an important step in astronaut mobility and spacewalk technology.
